Alvin's mother, Emma, had to sign special papers in order for him to join the U.S. Navy at the young age of 17. While there, a cook took pitty on the young Alvin and took him under his wing and taught him how to cook. Alvin also served on a boat that was on the Yang Sea Patrol.
While living in Oregon, Alvin's niece Denise and her husband Larry were friends with an older farm couple, Cliff and Josephine Royce. One day while visiting the topic of discussion had turned to Cliff's service in the U.S. Navy and how he had survived the battle at Pearl Harbor. Somehow Cliff had asked what Denise's maiden name was (which is Dawson) and asked if she was in any way related to an Alvin Dawson whom he had sailed with and how both had helped each other survive the battle of Pearl Harbor. After both gave a description of the Alvin Dawson they knew, it was determined that they were the same person. It really is a small world we live in.
