Recognised as the very first Director of Art and "guiding spirit" to what are now the Washington University School of Art and the Saint Louis Art Museum.

Ives came to the University in 1874 and served as director of the St. Louis School and Museum of Fine Arts from its inception in 1879 until 1909. During that time, he emerged as a strong public advocate for the Visual Arts, chairing the Art departments of both the Chicago and St. Louis World Fairs, in 1893 and 1904, respectively.
Two Ives homesteads still stand on Westminster Place, & Lucas Place in Saint Louis, Missouri.
