C. C. BICKEL, PROMINENT CIGAR MANUFACTURER, DIES
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD TOMORROW AT ST PAUL'S CHURCH
C. C. Bickel, one of Louisville's most prominent citizens, and a Main street cigar manufacturer, died yesterday afternoon at 2:00 at his home, 1054 Cherokee road. Mr. Bickel had been in failing health for the past year and three days ago suffered a general breakdown. His wife and four children were at his bedside.
Mr. Bickel was 78 years old and was president of C. C. Bickel & Co., cigar manufacturer, Sixth and Main streets, which was founded by him fifty years ago. He was born in Louisville [sic-Germany] and began his business career as a cigar maker. He purchased a large block of stock in the old First National Bank of this city and became a director of that bank. he was later elected first vice president. Clint C. McClarty was president at the time. A few years later Mr. Bickel was associated with a number of local business men in the purchase of the controlling interest in the Provident Assurance Society of New York. Mr. Bickel was a large stockholder and organizer of the White City Company. Mr. Bickel was one of the original organizers of the Louisville Home Telephone Company, and served as president for several years. He was a member of the Board of Trade and of the Pendennis Club.
Besides his widow he is survived by a son, Virgil, and three daughters, Mrs. King Stewart, Mrs. James Shelley and Mrs. B. E. Nofsinger. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 at St. Paul's Evangelical church. Burial will be private, in Cave Hill cemetery.
