Joseph Beck was the son of Joseph Beck, Sr. and Elizabeth Ross

Joseph married Alice M Masden September 8, 1896 in Louisville. On Tuesday, August 28, 1917, Alice noticed that her chickens had gotten into her garden. She went to investigate; and she found Joseph hanging from a rafter, in their barn, at 1012 Lynnhurst Avenue, in Louisville. This happened at about 0500 hours. Joseph Beck, Jr. had been suffering from asthma, for quite some time. Also, he had been experiencing symptoms of depression. On Monday, the 27th of August, he had a very bad headache. He awoke on Tuesday at about 0430 hours and told Alice that he had slept very well and felt much better. He gave no indication that he planned to end his life.

Joseph was survived by Alice, his mother, son William P. Beck, daughter Mrs. P. S. Churchman, brothers Louis and John Beck, sisters Mrs. C. Stark and Mrs. Edward Roller.

Joseph was a member of Woodmen of the World. His will was dated October 26, 1909; and Alice was named the beneficiary. He got a life insurance policy from this organization. After his death, Alice filed to collect on this life insurance policy, in the amount of $1000.00, plus $100.00, for the erection of a memorial. Alice was not able to collect; because when Joseph filled out the application for life insurance, he answered that he was not involved with liquor and that he did not suffer from asthma. Joseph Beck, Jr. was a saloon owner. Also, there was another clause that stated that if the insured caused their own death, the policy was void.
