He was a Milligan College graduate of 1901. He taught at Milligan College in 1901-1902 and then went on to the University of Virginia. After receiving a degree there, he went back to Milligan College as professor of History and English in 1904-1905. He became Vice-President and Field Secretary for Virginia Christian College in Lynchburg, VA between 1905-1909. He then went to graduate school at Harvard University.
