Phyllis May Entsminger Whitlock Fulton 1916 - 2012
Phyllis May Entsminger Whitlock Fulton was born April 27, 1916, in Mullen, Neb., the daughter of Elbridge Edward (Ted) and Beulah (Genkins) Entsminger. She spent her childhood in Hamilton and graduated from South High School in Denver.
Phyllis married Clarence (Duge) Whitlock soon after graduation from high school. They moved to Mount Harris, where Duge worked at the power plant and Phyllis was a homemaker. While at Mount Harris, Phyllis and Duge were blessed with a daughter, Betty Lou, and a son, Pete. Several years later, their second son, Guy, was born.
Phyllis and Duge moved to Hayden, where they eventually purchased a filling station and garage. Phyllis was responsible for all of the accounting duties for the business. Duge and Pete ran the filling station and garage. After selling the business, Phyllis went to work at the Routt County Assessor's Office in Steamboat Springs. She eventually was elected and served as the Routt County assessor. In 1975, Duge died of a heart attack.
In 1978, Phyllis married Charles (Chuck) Fulton. Phyllis and Chuck ran a sheep and cattle ranch outside of Hayden. Phyllis loved the many hours spent riding horses with Chuck. She also enjoyed raising a large garden, which supplied the family with canned goods throughout the year. Chuck and Phyllis were married until Chuck's death in 2008.
Phyllis was a member of the Hayden Congregational Church and of the Hayden Chapter No. 99 Order of the Eastern Star, where she served in several officer positions.
Phyllis died Oct. 12, 2012, at the Doak Walker Care Center, where she had resided for the past four years. She was 96 years old.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Betty Lou Sherman, of Clifton; her sons Pete (Barbara) Whitlock, of Big Fork, Mont., and Guy (Debbie) Whitlock, of Craig; her 10 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elbridge Edward (Ted) and Beulah Entsminger; her brothers Artis and Arlin (Slim); and her husbands Clarence (Duge) Whitlock and Charles (Chuck) Fulton.
