In The Line of Duty.
The son of R.B. Kilgore and his wife, the former Miss Wagoner, Guy Kilgore moved to Arizona about 1888. He married Ella (V?) Shewman (nee Stevens?) in Phoenix on January 1, 1904. He worked for the Phoenix Fire Department and was the driver of the Engine 1 Hose Wagon. He was shot by an intruder to Central Fire Station, and Firefighter Angel Delgado ran in from outside and subdued the gunman. Guy died at St Josephs Hospital.
The gunman confessed that he had no reason to shoot Guy, and was convicted and sentenced.
He was survived by his wife and four children.
Fire Engineer Guy Kilgore had served the Phoenix Fire Department for approximately 7 years, and drove the horse drawn fire Hose Cart, with horses 'Dewey' and 'Schley'.
Guy was born April 11th 1873 in Illinois, and he is buried at the Phoenix Firefighters cemetery at Greenwood Memorial Park, near the Bell Tower. The Bell Tower was built the year before, in 1910, and was tolled for the very first time for a line of duty fire fighter, Guy Kilgore, at his funeral service. His grave is marked with a red cross during the annual Fallen Fire Fighter Memorials each January. He was survived by his wife, 2 children and his half-brother, PFD Fire Fighter Thomas V. Kilgore.
Wife Ella (V?) Stevens Shewman Kilgore, born 1878 in Mississippi, was last shown in a 1918 city directory in El Paso Texas, living near her brother in law, Shelby Milton Kilgore.
