Funeral services for Vernon Thorton Johnson Sr., 74, who passed away November 9, 2012, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4747 Main Street, Jacksonville, FL 32206 with Pastor Matthew S. Meadows officiating. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday (Today) from 4-6 PM at the funeral home.
Mr. Johnson was a native of Jacksonville, Florida and was a graduate of Andrew Jackson High School Class of 1957. He had retired from JEA after 25 years of service and was active in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He was a member of New Berlin Road Church and was the youngest of 6 children.
Preceded in death by his son, the late Jeffrey Scott Johnson Sr.; Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Margaret Jewell Johnson; 2 daughters, Cynthia Twigg (Craig), and Rhonda Blount (Michael Davis); 1 son, Vernon T. Johnson Jr., (Tina); 2 sisters, Mary Ella LeBlanc and Patricia Looney; 1 brother, Giles Johnson (Roslyn); 7 grandchildren, Robert E. Matthews III, Craig W. Twigg Jr., Amber Twigg, Jeffrey S. Johnson Jr., Michael Chaffe, Brooke Johnson, and Vernon T. Johnson III; 6 great-grandchildren; Saylor, Liam, Maggie Ruth, Ethan, Logan James, and Logan Connor.
