(Private, Newman’s Alabama Cavalry) Burrell was born 1818 in Rutherford County North Carolina; died January 28, 1865 at Camp Douglas Illinois and is buried in the Confederate Mound at the cemetery there. Burrell served with Captain Wiley Newman's Volunteer Home Guard Cavalry.∼
Burrell Verner Pace, age 48, was a private in Newman's Alabama Volunteers. He was patroling home territory on Sand Mountain, Alabama when he and two others were captured by Union Troops on November 6, 1864. They were transported to Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois, an infamous POW camp. There he died of disease on January 28, 1865, shortly before the Civil War was over. His remains were buried in Chicago near the Confederate Mound Memorial, pictured here at a visit by his great grandson. A memorial stone was erected with family graves in Alabama.
