CARIBOU and WESTMANLAND – Evelyn C. Hedstrom, 94, wife of the late Theodore Hedstrom died May 13, 2005, at Caribou following a long illness. She was born May 6, 1911, at New Sweden, the daughter of Axel and Ethel (Tall) Larsson. She was a graduate of the Jemtland Grammar School, Caribou High Scholl and the Presque Isle Normal School. Following a short time of teaching, Evelyn pursued a nursing career, doing her training at Cary Memorial Hospital. She worked as a nurse at Cary for several years until her marriage to Theodore Hedstrom Oct. 31, 1936. They lived on their farm in Westmanland, for many years, where they raised their family. When her family was grown, she resumed her career in nursing, first returning to Cary Memorial Hospital and concluding by working at the Caribou Nursing Home, where she retired while in her 70′s. When Theodore's health began to fail they left the family farm and moved to Caribou. She was able to live by herself in her apartment until the age of 93. Mrs. Hedstrom was a member of the New Sweden Evangelical Covenant Church. She truly enjoyed having her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit her. She is survived by six sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin and Ola Hedstrom and Alton and Sharon Hedstrom, all of Caribou, Warren and Nellie Hedstrom of Orono, Gary and Anita Hedstrom of Farmington, Douglas and Jane Hedstrom of Gray and David and Kathy Hedstrom of St. Thomas, Pa.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Marie Garland of Bar Harbor and Letha and Myron Van Kirk of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Eloise Anderson of New Sweden and Natalie Silverness of Loral Park, N.Y. She will be sadly missed by her 22 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore in 1991; and a brother, Everett Larsson. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday, at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2005, from the Chapel of the Mockler Funeral Home, with the Rev. Shelly Timber officiating. Interment will be in the Westmanland Cemetery. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Mrs. Hedstrom may do so through the Evangelical Covenant Church Memorial Fund. Following the service the family invites everyone to gather at the Evangelical Covenant Church in New Sweden for a time of fellowship and refreshments.
