Obituary of Eulalie E.A. Herring
Federal Union (Selma, AL), June 25, 1865

DIED.
In New Orleans at St. Charles Hotel, on Friday June 23d at 12 o'clock, EULALIE E. A. HERRING, of this city, daughter of Rufus J. Herring, deceased, aged 5 years and 10 months.
She left this place on the 17th last, a beautiful and promising child. She is now returned cold in death. She was taken sick on the steamer Reserve, on the 18th, with high fever and vomiting; at intervals she would be clear of fever and seem cheerful. When her parents arrived in New Orleans, they called in Dr. M. Helvy, who pronounced her disease worms, and that she would soon be well, but the manner in which she spoke and acted alarmed her mother very much. She was a member of the Baptist Sabbath School in the place where she learned to sing many beautiful hymns. She would sing the last at night and the first in the morning – "I want to be an Angel." She spoke of death several times. While on board the Eleanora Carroll between Mobile and New Orleans, she said – "Mother, I want to die. My Father calls me, and I must go to meet him in the promised land."

No more will she sit with the Sabbath School.
No more will we hear that lovely voice;
No more will we kiss those sweet rosy lips,
But soon we hope to greet her in eternal bliss.
