Joe Merrill Cain passed away peacefully at 3 A.M. on Monday, November 5, 2012 at Indiana University Health Hospice House. Joe was the first born to the home of William Henry and Allie Marie (Siscoe) Cain on September 28, 1939 in Bloomington, Indiana. Joe grew up in Smithville attending Smithville High School, graduating in 1957. During the summers, school year and weekends when he was not tinkering with his car, he helped his Dad on the Zikes Road farm, he also worked at several filling stations then worked for his father who was a stone mason. Joe was of the Pentecost Faith.
In 1960 Joe decided to join the military and his choice was the Air Force. He did his basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas, then he was stationed Chanute AFB, Illinois, Ramey AFB, Aguidilla, Puerto Rico. While in the service he was assigned as an aircraft electrician and worked on B52 bombers and KC tanker planes. The air force training eventually led Joe a career as an electrician.
Joe belonged to many veteran organizations. He was a life member of American Legion Post #18 and was very active in the Post. He held all of the offices of the Post including Commander in 1988-89. He was a member of the Board of Trustees for several years and a very proud member of the Veterans Honor Guard for 23 years as well as 40/8 Voiture 843 as the Nurses Training Scholarship chairman. Joe also belonged to B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 446, Moose Lodge 1081, Eagles Lodge 1085 and Amvets Post 2000.
Joe retired in 1993 from IBEW Local #725 as a Journeyman Wireman of 35 years in 1993. In the next few years Joe enjoyed playing golf with buddies. He was proud to say that he was made a member of the "hole in one club" on June 3, 2004 at Hidden Hills. Joe also enjoyed several years in his wood working shop making gifts and other items. His other hobbies included hunting and fishing, bowling and crossword puzzles.
Joe is survived by Mother, Allie Marie Latimer, wife and caregiver Karen (Hendrix) Cain, daughter Susan Anne James (Marty) and son Gary Wood (Tammy). Joe was thrilled that as much as he hated giving his little girl away that, he was to receive four beautiful grandchildren, Avery, Austin, Eli and Luke, they brought him over 19 years of enjoyment. Step-grandchildren Steven, Joni and Allison Medley. Siblings surviving include Sherry Taylor (Dale), Mike Cain, Jeff (Jackie) Cain, Dan (Suzy) Cain, Steve (Schyrel) Cain all in the Bloomington area, Don (Vickie) Cain of Crawfordsvillle and sister Karen Robertson (Ted) of McKinney, Texas.
Preceeding Joe in death were his father William Henry Cain, step-father Raymond Latimer, two nieces Marlissa Lane Taylor and Dana Cain Gilstrap, one nephew Todd Alan Robertson and sister-in-law Diana Cain several aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be Thursday, November 8, 2012 from 4 – 8 p.m. at Deremiah Frye Greene & Harrell Chapel. Funeral services will be Friday, November 9, 2012 at noon with visitation prior to services at 11 a.m. Services will be conducted by Wayne Trisler, Chaplain, American Legion Post #18 and Joe's brother Jeff Cain. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel where The Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Family and Friends will gather at the American Legion Post #18 afterwards.
