Joe Allen Spain (1946 - 2012)

Joseph Allen Spain died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012. He was born Oct. 5, 1946 in Milan, Tenn., to Samuel H. Spain and the late Dorothy Warren Spain.

He married his childhood sweetheart, Kay Barber Spain, on Sept. 9, 1967. He was father of his devoted son, Allen Warren Spain and spouse Amy Baumgartner Spain.

He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Jackson Joseph and Genevieve Therese Spain, whom he loved and adored.

He is survived by his sisters, Debra Spain Vinson and husband Harold of Memphis, and Alesia' Spain of Knoxville, TN; nephews: Simon and Casey Vinson of Memphis, TN; maternal cousin, Kaye Warren Wilkins and daughter Kayela Wilkins Clark, both of Charleston, S.C. and step-mother, Martha Spain.

Joe graduated from Jackson High School, Jackson, TN in 1964. Member of the 1964 TN State Championship football team. Graduate of the University of TN with a Bachelor of Science in Education with honors in 1968. He belonged to the Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) Fraternity. He received a scholarship to University of MS from the National Science Foundation, graduating in August 1972 with a Masters Degree in Combined Sciences. He was the head of the Science Dept. at Butler High School, where he taught Biology and Chemistry for four years beginning the summer of 1968. In 1973, he joined Owens-Corning Fiberglass in Albany, GA. We moved to Mandeville in September of '77, where he became Manager of the Supply Division of Owens Corning. He had many positions over the years of his career here in the New Orleans area. He retired from Owens-Corning as Global Accounts Business Manager in 2009 after 36 years of service.

He was a member of St. Timothy United Methodist Church since 1977, where he served in numerous positions. He was the Chair of the Administrative Council for 15 years, Chairperson of the Staff Parish Relations Committee and was a Youth Sunday School teacher for 25 years. He was a fifth generation Methodist. He was a Mentor for the Methodist Home for Children of Greater New Orleans, supported the WWII Museum in New Orleans, an avid longtime supporter of athletics of the University of TN and loved the University and the State of TN.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend A Service of Death and Resurrection at St. Timothy United Methodist Church, 335 Asbury Dr., Mandeville, LA 70448 on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 11 a.m. Visitation at the church from 10 a.m. until service time. His remains will then be forwarded to George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home, 2812 N. Highland Ave., Jackson, TN 38301 for services on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 2 p.m. Visitation at Jackson from 1 p.m. until service time. Interment to follow at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cedar Grove, TN.

Memorial donations may be made to the Methodist Home for Children of Greater New Orleans, Post Office Box 1747, Mandeville, LA 70471.
