Bernard Franklin Huyck, age 61, of Pickford , Michigan, died Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at his home.

Bernard F. Huyck, known as Bernie Huyck, was born March 3, 1950 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to Orries Franklin Huyck and Phyllis Lorraine (Batho) Huyck. Bernie grew up in Pickford and graduated from Pickford High School in 1968. After graduation he joined the United States Coast Guard and was stationed on Guam. When he returned from the service he worked for the family business, Huyck's Poultry Farm, distributing fresh eggs throughout the eastern upper peninsula.

He married Barbara Joyce Ann Newcomb on March 30, 1984 at the Pickford United Methodist Church. In 1989 he left the poultry business and began working for the United States Postal Service. He worked in various area post offices as Officer in Charge before becoming a postmaster where he served in several locations throughout the eastern upper peninsula before spending the final years of his career at Hessel, Michigan. His trademark was his pleasant attitude and his willingness to go out of his way to help people in any way he could. In 2008 he reluctantly retired due to his declining health. Bernie was a member of the Pickford United Methodist Church and the Pickford Lions Club where he served for several years as club secretary. Bernie enjoyed woodworking, golfing, snowmobiling, fishing, reading, working puzzles, collecting coins and Thomas Kincaid paintings, watching Westerns and predicting his beloved Lions losses while praying they won. He loved to eat chocolate – anything chocolate. He enjoyed all holidays but Christmas was his favorite. Bernie loved to spend time with his grandchildren and enjoyed giving them rides on his scooter.

Bernie was survived by his wife, Barbara Huyck; sons, Jason (Samantha) Huyck of Sault Ste. Marie, Daniel (Mandy) Huyck of Novi, Michigan, Nicholas (Mary) Huyck of Sault Ste. Marie, Ronald (Tina) Lounds of Dafter, Michigan and Josh (Dawn) Lounds of Pickford; and grandchildren, Cassie Huyck, Arianna Huyck, Evan Huyck, Alex Huyck, Tyler Lounds, Emily Lounds, and Allison Lounds. He was further survived by brother, Steven (Marilyn) Huyck of Highland, Indiana and sisters, Cathy Young of Pickford and JoAnn (William) Bawks of Visalia, California.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Huyck.
