James was the son of John Alfred Morgan and Mildred "Millie" Grayham (Graham).

In 1910, James was a boarder in the home owned by Benjamin Franklin McCullough. James worked as a laborer in a tile factory at that time.

Also living at the McCullough home was the landlord's daughter, Mrs. Lucinda "Parilee" (nee McCullough) Leither. She had been married previously, but was no longer with her husband at that time.

James married Parilee on 23 Apr 1910 in Commerce, Scott County, Missouri. They were the parents of 5 children.

The family lived in Santa Fe, Alexander County, Illinois, where James worked as a laborer doing odd jobs. The Morgans moved to Hartford, Madison County, Illinois shortly after the end of World War II.

James died at his home at the age of 75 years, 3 months and 30 days.

He was survived by his wife, Parilee; 1 son, Henry J. Morgan; 4 daughters, Mildred Troutwine, Georgia Ballew, Fannie Albright and Vivian Knight, all of South Roxana, Illinois; 17 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and 1 brother, John Morgan, Jr. of Thebes, Illinois.

Visitation was held at the Streeper Funeral Home from 03 Feb 1953 until 05 Feb 1953. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on the afternoon of 05 Feb 1953 at General Baptist Church.

James' wife, Parilee, passed away in 1968 and was buried next to him.
