Uncle Bud Cox was born six months after the death of his father, Marion McDonald "Don" Cox, at the Battle of Dove Creek, an ill-fated battle with a large band of Kickapoo Indians. After Don's death, Bud's mother, Martha E. Baugh Cox, married S. P. McInnis. Bud along with his McInnis half brothers built a large ranch in Brown County where they were well known for their registered Hereford Cattle. Bud never married. His two older siblings were David Silas Cox and Texanna "Maggie" Cox Wright.
