Rod was born in Charlotte, Michigan on June 3, 1935 to Martin and Glenna Garn; he was one of four children. He attended a country school through the 8th grade and graduated Charlotte High School. While in high school, he was Class President during his sophomore, junior and senior years. He played baseball , was the captain of the football team, was a member of the 4-H Club and of Future Farmers of America. After graduating, he attended Michigan State University where he was on the Dairy Judging Team and earned a Bachelor Degree majoring in Science and Agriculture with a minor in Business Administration.
In 1961, Rod moved to Kirkwood, Missouri with his wife and three children, where he began working for McDonnell Douglas (Boeing) as Division Supervisor of Engineering Planning and Administration. He remained with the company until his retirement in 1990.
In 1967, Rod married Jan Humphrey, bringing their combined family to a total of seven children. Rod was involved with the Kirkwood Khoury League and the Kirkwood Junior Football League beginning in 1969. He was dedicated to both organizations by coaching his children's teams and serving as a member on both boards. He went on to be head coach of a Kirkwood American Legion Baseball Program for several years. In 1994, he and Jan moved with their three grandchildren to Rolla where he continued to coach Little League baseball for a few more years. In 2004, he was inducted into the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame.
During the 18 years living in Rolla, he became involved in the Anutt Community Church. He served on the Board of Directors, taught Vacation Bible School, was a teacher for the kids' ministry, Contenders, leader of their Bible Study, a Senior Adult Sunday School teacher and served on the Board for Agape House.
Rod loved being back in the country and living on the farm, but most of all, he loved his family.
Rod entered into rest on September 1, 2012 in Salem, Missouri at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 29 days.
Rod was united in marriage to Janice Jaeger. They were the parents of seven children. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, on January 6, 2011 and one son, Kent Garn.
Rod is survived by six children, Terri Herring, of St. Charles; Keith Humphrey, of Herman; Sharon Garn, of Seattle, Washington; Scott Garn, of Arnold; Kimm O'Connor, of House Springs; and Kaye Sansoni, of Fenton; twenty one grandchildren, Tammy Bakker, Jamey Thomas, Greg Thomas, Jessica Brandriff, Robert Garn, Kent Garn Jr., Amy Brummitt, Mariah Cunningham, Fawn O'Connor, Grace Green, Keith Humphrey Jr., Billy Humphrey, Bonnie Mtpleasant, Jaella Humphrey, Brian Humphrey, Christian Garn, Hannah Garn, Josh Garn, Lauren Garn, Jacob Sansoni and Oksana Sansoni; twenty-five great grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn Effner; two brothers, Doug and Rich Garn; and many nieces and nephews.
Rod was a member of Anutt Community Church. The church and his church family were very important to him. He was very active in many church activities including Vacation Bible School. Rod had a great passion for this program having such a love for children. He had helped with many youth sports over the years and was always known to be helping kids. Rod served as treasurer for the Agape Home. This was another program that was very dear to him. Rod will be deeply missed by his family, church family and all who loved him.
Funeral service for Jesse Roderic Garn was 12:00 noon Friday September 7, 2012 at Dent County Memorial Chapel with Chuck Cook officiating. Music was provided by Sid Bakker, Jeff Cunningham and Jake Sansoni. The Twenty-third Psalm was read by Chloee Brummitt and Joshuah Garn. Many family members and friends shared wonderful memories of Rod. All arrangements were under the direction of Dent County Memorial Chapel.
