Helen Hamersma, a 52 year resident of Norco, passed away on Friday, November 2, 2012.
Helen was born July 14, 1925 in Koudum, Friesland, the Netherlands and immigrated with her parents and brother to the United States in April 1929. She grew up and attended school in the Cerritos-Norwalk area and after graduation, she worked as a waitress at the Wooden Shoe restaurant. Helen met her husband, John Hamersma, through her co-worker and best friend (John's sister) Joanne Dokter. Helen always said that she married John because she liked Joanne so well. John and Helen married in January 1948 and lived in the Bellflower area until they moved, with thier four children, to Norco in the spring of 1960.
Helen was active with all of her children's schools as part of the PTA and as a room mother. For many years she was involved with the YMCA Indian Maidens and the ladies group "The Baker's Dozen." She also enjoyed shopping for and collecting antiques and at one time boasted a collection of 50 plus vintage cookie jars.
Helen is survived by her son, John (Kay) of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; daughters Roberta and Suzanne of Norco; grandchildren Paul Wood of Apple Valley; Karen Cotten (Ray) of Rescue, CA; John Andrew Hamersma and Emmaly Hamersma of Oxnard; plus six great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, John (1990), daughter, Jane (2009), father, William (1978), mother, Wilma (1966) and brother, Robert (1946).
Services will be held Saturday, November 10, 2012, 11:00a.m., at Pierce Brothers-Crestlawn Mortuary, 11500 Arlington Avenue, Riverside, CA (951)689-1441.
Mom loved flowers, but always said she didn't want them when she was dead, as she wouldn't be able to enjoy them...so, with that in mind, in lieu of flowers please make a donation, in her memory, to the American Red Cross to help the victims of Superstorm Sandy. The Riverside County Chapter address is 6235 River Crest Drive, Suite A, Riverside, CA 92507 or www.redcross.org.
