Artist. Produced around 260 works, and established a reputation as a leading portrait painter. Some of his most famous portraits include Queen Victoria (1838), Washington Irving, Thomas Jefferson, and Andrew Jackson. He also painted historical scenes, most notably "The Passage of the Delaware," which now hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and "The Capture of Major Andre." His son was Civil War Union Brigadier General Alfred Sully. Father and son are buried in the same plot.
