Nannie Bet (Newton) Benningfield was the daughter of Leo Rice and Susan Ann (Russell) Newton. She was the granddaughter of Leo W. and Lydian Ann (Wise) Newton and George W. and Susan ( Wheldon) Russell.
Her death certificate #22778 says she was born in Spurlington, KY as were her parents. The informant was James Benningfield, her husband, of R. R. #2, Finley, Marion Co., KY. She is listed as a housewife. Her grandchildren told me today that she died of a cerebral hemmorhage in her vegetable garden. She was aged 53 years, five months, and 17 days. Dr. E. C. Gowdy of Campbellsville, KY signed this death record. It says she was buried in the Russell Family Cemetery on August 2, 1936. Her undertaker was Blaine(?) Smith(?), Campbellsville, KY. She and her husband are the only two with tombstones in this cemetery. Her grandchildren: Joe M. Abell of Franklin, KY and Betty (Abell) Drake of Florida told me that this cemetery is on the east side of KY 55-U.S. 68 at the summit of Muldraugh's Hill across from the Pruyear Auction Barn in a deep woods. Their great-great grandparents, George W. Russell and Susan (Wheldon) Russell are probably buried there and the reason this cemetery is called the Russell Burial Ground.
