Mattie Lucille Ford was born to George Elbert Ford and Minnie Isabel Chaffin in Eva, Morgan County, Alabama, the third child and only daughter out of six children who survived to adulthood. Her Ford ancestors moved to the Eva vicinity following the US Civil War: her Chaffin ancestors moved there following the Chickasaw and Cherokee Cessions in the early 19th Century.
When Lucille was a child, her family moved to the Birmingham, AL vicinity where her father worked in a Louisville & Nashville railroad shop, while her mother kept house. At a young age, Lucille was put to work with daily chores in a very strict, harsh environment. In school, Lucille exhibited many talents and abilities. She also preferred being called by her middle name, so her friends and family knew her as "Lucille".
At the age of 18 Lucille married Howard William Nelson, who was six years older than she. Their first child, Mary Frances, was stillborn; but they went on to have three more girls who survived to have their own families, and one son, William Gordon, who was killed in a motorcycle wreck, at age 15, on November 4th, 1960. The loss of Gordon devastated the family.
Lucille was called "Mammy" by her eleven grandchildren, on whom she doted with her crafts and birthday cakes. It seemed there wasn't anything at which she didn't excel. I cherish the memories of Christmas and Easter at Mammy's and Pappy's home, listening to Pappy's stories, and observing Mammy's antics.
