Corinth - After a lingering illness of more than a year, Col. John D. Bills died at his home, aged 72 years. He was born in Pontotoc county, enlisted in Company B, Thirty-second Mississippi regiment, Col. Lowry commanding, was captured at the battle of Chickamauga and held prisoner twenty-two months. Deceased served two terms as senator from Alcorn, Tishomingo, and Prentiss counties, succeeding the Hon. J.M. Stone, when he was elected governor, considered the best parliamentarian of the senate.

Enlisted; 03/06/1862 Lebanon 23 Captured by the enemy at Dug Gap, Ga. Sept. 10, 1863. Forwarded to Nashville, Sept. 18, 1863, for exchange. Transferred to Baltimore Feb. 9, 1864. Arrived at Johnson Island Feb. 14, 1864. Transferred to Ft. Delaware June 24, 1864. Place of residence, Marshall County, MS. Complexlon fair, hair brown, eyes gray, height 5'11". Captured again Chickamauga sent to prison. Released May 22, 1865, by order of the War Dept. b. 3/2/1839
d. 7/3/1911
