Cumberland Presbyterian Preacher
as was His Father William Harris of KY.
God Rest their Souls.
THOMAS is my 5X Great-Grandfather -
Thomas Highsmith Harris was an elder at the Cumberland Prs Ch located at the old McAdams Schoolhouse "vec.Illinois & Zang Blvd.Dallas-Oak Cliff) and later at the Cumberland Pres Ch in Lisbon in 1860/70's"--- He married Martha Elizabeth Skiles (born in Kentucky) and they moved to Lancaster TX in 1852 with his wife, children and mother, Nancy Highsmith Harris in a large covered wagon. They settled on land divided by the present day Lancaster Rd (Texas SH 342)2 miles north of Lancaster next to the George Floyd headright.
Thomas H. Harris purchased the 640 acre Smith Elkins Survey Abstract 430 from heirs of C.G. Cole who purchased it from Mr. Smith Elkins (a lawyer from New Hampshire) as a headright to the State of Texas from the original Peters Colony. This purchase was made from an heir of G.C. Cole. The Survey was between present day Telephone Rd. and Cedardale Rd. and from the Floyd-Taylor Cemetery 1 mile west across Lancaster Rd.(update 1/08/2006).
In 1857 he sold the southern 100 acres to his son-in-law, Absalom C. Matlock, and 200 southwest acres to another son-in-law James Harvey Taylor. James & Sarah are buried here. Nancy M. Matlock buried here. Burial site of her husband Absalom C. Matlock is unknown - is said he died circa 1865. (Possible Civil War death??) In honor of Absalom - we have created a Memorial - it is our wish that he is here without a marker - but we must Honor his life. Where he is now - is with Nancy dancing on the stars in Heaven.
