David was the fourth of seven children born to Dr Roderick Alexander Bethune and his wife Margaret Elizabeth Mayes. He was born in SC, moved with his family to AL; then as a young man moved to Ashley Co, AR. He married Ella Herren June 25, 1884. They had two sons, David Jr born 1888 and Evan born 1892. David Sr died 9 Nov 1894 in Ashley Co, AR.
