Suggested edit: The rosary and vigil service for Andrew E. Schmidt, a retired Greencreek farmer and rancher, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Greencreek. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Andrew Schumacher of Cottonwood at St. Anthony's Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the Greencreek Community Cemetery.

Schmidt died Saturday of causes related to age at St. Mary's Hospital in Cottonwood. He was 90.

He was born Oct. 9, 1908, in Greencreek to Joseph and Philomena Nuxoll Schmidt. He attended school in Greencreek and was known for his pitching ability playing for the town baseball team. He later coached the town baseball and basketball teams.

He married Frances Wassmuth Oct. 20, 1931, in Greencreek. They farmed and ranched near Greencreek. She died Dec. 26, 1990.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Greencreek, the St. Anthony's Society, and served on the original Greencreek Community Hall Board from 1952 until 1980. He was a Yankees fan and also enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.

Survivors include three sons, Harold Schmidt of Cottonwood, Kenneth Schmidt of Greencreek and Roy Schmidt of Cheney; three daughters, Doris Sonnen of Greencreek, Karen Lindquist of Seattle and Jean Hottinger of Craigmont; 28 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a son, Donald Schmidt, five brothers, four sisters, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Uhlorn Funeral Home in Cottonwood is in charge of arrangements.
