Notes:
1. 1839, Aug. 8. Gallipolis Journal: James Rice of Greenfield Twp. Gallia County, Ohio was 116 years old last June. His health is good, and he still retains strength sufficient to walk about without assistance. He has a son living, who is 83 years of age.
2. Census: 1840 Gallia, Ohio, states birth date as Aug. 24, 1724 in good health written across census line. (Was 116 years old on 24 Aug 1840). [See Original Census Document 1840, James Rice, Greenfield, Gallia, Ohio]
3. Mary Rice: Based on 1830 Fed Census, Greenfield, Gallia, OH, Mary was between 80-89 years of age. That means she was born between 1741-1750. This wife, Mary's name, appears as James's wife on both the 1801 and 1832 land sales. Mary does not appear with James in the 1840 Fed Census. It is presumed she deceased sometime between 1832 and 1840.

Subject: Re: [Rice-Southern-L] RICE in Montgomery/Grayson pre-1790

A James Rice and Robert Bristco/Frisco had a large land holding in the area of Montgomery, Wythe, Tazewell County, Virginia called the James Rice Robert Frisco improvement. A number of land sales from this improvement are listed
in the court record books of Montgomery, Wythe and Tazewell Counties. James and his wife Mary sold their land in Virginia and moved to Gallia County, Ohio in their later years. James is listed in the 1840 census as 116 years old in good health. This was so unusual that the census taker wrote it across the line from James' name. A Gallia County News paper mentioned his longevity a couple of years later. The last Virginia land sale I have listed is to their grandson Jeremiah Lambert for a token price. They spent their last few years of life in Gallia County with the off spring of their daughter Hannah who married Job Lambert. Some of the children of this Rice-Lambert related family migrated to Carter and Lawrence County Kentucky in the early 1800's.

GREENFIELD TOWNSHIP.

The first to settle in the township were Daniel Faulkner, James Rice (who died at the advanced age of one hundred and twenty years), and Andrew Faulkner. On the 22d of June, 1882, the latter gave an account of his early pioneer recollections to the one appointed to collect and record them for this work, and four days later he had "passed beyond the river," dying suddenly June 26th, 1882. The pioneers first settled at the forks of Symmes creek, Daniel Faulkner building the first cabin, in 1806.

Footnote: Daniel Faulkner also appears on the Kanawha County, VA Personal Property Tax list for 1801.

---

DNA testing has placed this James Rice in Group 5 of the Rice YDNA Project. DNA testing has established a very close association of descendants of William, Ezekiel, George Washington, and James Rice, Jr. Ezekiel's death record in 1862 identifies James and Eliner as parents. Old James, William, Elijah, Ezekiel,Jeremiah and George Rice frequently appear on the same county documents in VA and Ohio. Job Lambert a supposed son-in-law also appears on Kanawha County Personal Property records (1801, 1802, and 1806).

Date of Birth and age comes from Niles' Weekly Register, Volume 59, September 1840 – March 1841, Printed by the Editor: Jeremiah Hughes, Baltimore, MD, page 288 which states "Longevity: There is a man living in Greenfield Township, Gallia County, Ohio by the name of James Rice who was 116 years old on the 24th of April last and yet bids fair to add some years to the days of his earthly pilgrimage."
Gallipolis Journal, 8 Aug 1839, states he has a son 83 years old still living. (This probably just implies that his oldest son was still living.) That would have been "William", born 1756.
