Army Spc. Perez was assigned to 6th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery Regiment, Fort Sill, Oklahoma as a combat medic. Jose was a 1998 graduate of San Diego High School and was remembered as a sharply dressed, competitive young man who worked hard but knew how to enjoy himself. He enlisted in the Army in July 2000. Jose's sense of humor was matched only by his genuine desire to help others. Amancio, as his friends and family knew him, was driving a humvee with three passengers when his convoy was ambushed on a supply route in Taji. He was shot in the chest but drove the others to safety before collapsing and dying. Jose is remembered as someone to call when you were in trouble, loved his grandma's cooking and loved the Army.
