Killed in Action, near the village of Nieppe, World War I, as a member of Headquarters Company, 310th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division. Age: 27 years, 7 months, 29 days.

Henry was the first to die in the war from Rome, NY, and in his honor the Rome American Legion Post #24 is named after him.

Prior to being drafted into the Army, Henry was a plumber for 10 years, working for John R. Harper, in Rome.

He was the youngest and only son of Patrick H. and Rosana "Rose" Garry Smith.
