Mary Elizabeth Burke Jennings, better known as "Libby" was born in Taylorsville, N.C. on December 15th 1912 and passed away at the age of 99 at her home in Taylorsville on October 9th, 2012. She was the daughter of John Hayden Burke and Mamie Matheson Burke, who preceded her in death she was also preceded in death by two brothers Harold and William Burke and one sister Carolyn Burke. She attended and graduated from Taylorsville School and after graduation, attended Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. and later transferred to Women's College which later became UNC-Greensboro.
It was her ambition to become an interior decorator, but as providence often changes our destinies, the Depression changed hers. After completing a Commercial Course at Women's College, she began work in her father's law office in Taylorsville and also spent several years working with Farm Security.
Mr. Hayden Burke was a widely known and respected criminal lawyer. He died on August 14, 1963, his 95th birthday, as he was actively pursuing his profession. He collapsed while trying a case and endured long enough to give sufficient information to win his case.
Elizabeth was a life long member of the Taylorsville Presbyterian Church in Taylorsville, where she was an Elder until 1970. She also held the position of president of the Women of the Church and was an alternating Circle chairman.
She was a charter member of the Wit and Wisdom book club (she was an avid reader), the Home and Garden Club and was also a charter member of the The 300 club, which was a local investors' organization. She was also a driving force behind the construction of the Alexander County Public Library in Taylorsville and served on the original Board of Trustees for 5 years.
For more than 20 years she served as the first lady to the Town of Taylorsville as the wife of Attorney Ray Jennings. Ray Jennings, who died on April 20th, 1970, distinguished himself not only as a mayor, but also became a statewide and national Republican figure, while serving as North Carolina State Chairman of the Republican Party during the President Eisenhower Administration As in his law profession, as well as in his community affairs, he always put far more into what he did than he ever took out, as did "Libby", who also shared his passion for politics and public service..
Libby Jennings achieved a rare position in her life- a position which had insured an optimistic and sympathetic acceptance of what is past, an active participation in the present and a driving will to be part of the future.
Elizabeth is survived by one daughter, Emily Jennings Scott and her husband, Ron Scott from West End, N.C., three sons: Michael Jennings from Asheville, N.C., James "Burkie" Jennings from Taylorsville, N.C. and Tom Jennings from Taylorsville, N.C.
