FAMILY NOTE: Even though there are errors, (probably in transcription), the original information posted for Carrie by others has been left. The following information is the result of continued research.

According to the Axtell book by Carson Augustus Axtell, (page 53) Caroline was born 11 July 1837, in Mercer county, Pennsylvania.

In the 1850 census for Mercer county, Sandy Creek township, Pennsylvania, Carrie is age 12, and still living with her parents, Joseph and Eliza (Elizabeth) Axtell and her siblings Amy, Linus Cyrus, Permelia, Sarah, Joseph and Albert. She had attended school during the last year.

In the 1860 census for Illinois, Warren county, Roseville, Caroline is living with her sister and brother-in-law, Samuel and Clarinda (Axtell) Cole. She is age 22 and her occupation is listed as school teacher. (Her surname is mispelled as Atell.)

She was apparently admitted to the First Illinois State Hospital For The Insane as inmate 1906 on Nov. 15, 1863 with nearest kin listed as Permilla Axtel, sister, of Roseville, Illinois. She died on July 2, 1864 and was buried on 3 July 1864 in the Immanuel North Cemetery, South Jacksonville, Morgan county, Illinois.

According to "Red Barn Burials" she was "taken away by friends" in March of 1865. She was probably removed from this cemetery by other family members and buried for a second time in the Roseville Cemetery, Roseville, Illinois. Other family members are also buried in the Roseville cemetery. Her parents (Joseph and Elizabeth) are here as well as her brother Zenas, and members of the William Dilley family.

We do not know the reason for her admission to the state hospital or what was the cause of her death. Many thanks to Pastor G. F. Hilliker for his work at helping to identify this missing child and many like her. Also thanks to Kerry Lighty for her work at listing Carrie's burial here. Caroline is now resting with her family, hopefully at peace.
