Jose "Chino", a lifelong resident of Canjilon, was predeceased by his parents Leopoldo Maez and Sofia V. Olguin; first wife Elena Martinez Maez; granddaughter Ellia Cera; brother Max Maez; sisters: Martina Esquibel and Marianita Romero; stepfather Lauriano Olguin; and half-brothers: Johnny and Chano Olguin.

Jose was survived by his wife Julia Maez; sons: Leopoldo T. Maez (wife Leticia) and Donald Maez; daughters: Lenora Marquez (husband Efrain) and Genoveva Cera (husband Miguel); 11 grandchildren; sisters: Sylvia Martinez (husband Placedes) and Dorothy Martinez (husband Eugene) of Española, Lojina Martinez (husband Climaco) and Livia Olguin all of Canjilon; brother-in-law Leo Leyba (wife Dorothy); sister-in-law Enacita Leyba of Canjilon; and many other relatives and friends.

Jose retired from the New Mexico State Highway Department in Santa Fe. He was an avid outdoorsman and a member of Los Penitentes de Nuestro Padre Jesus de Canjilon.

A Rosary was recited on Feb. 23rd at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Santa Fe. A second Rosary was recited on Feb. 24th in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home in Española. Funeral Mass was on Feb. 25th at San Jose Catholic Church in Canjilon. Burial followed in the Canjilon Catholic Cemetery.
