Oren Vance Welshhons, 88, born August 19, 1924 passed away Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Westview Care Center in Indianola from congestive heart failure.

Vance was an Army veteran of WWII, having served in the Phillipines and occupied Germany. He was a 50 year member of the American Legion Post # 165 in Indianola and a long-time member of the Indianola First Baptist Church . Following his service in the Army, he farmed several years before joining Firestone Tire & Rubber where he worked 33 years prior to his 1985 retirement. He enjoyed the outdoors, pheasant hunting, fishing and mushroom hunting. He also enjoyed harvesting walnuts every fall for his family and friends. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mildred (Chambers) Welshhons; children, Steven (Beverly) Welshhons of Indianola, Stanley (Phyllis) Welshhons of Rochester, NY, Linda Hickman and Louise (Steve) Johnson of Indianola and Randy Welshhons of Lacona; grandchildren, Brenda Hickman, Brian Hickman, Mike Welshhons, Katie Welshhons, Nicole Welshhons, Celeste Welshhons and Derek Welshhons; great-grandchildren, Brittany and Dakota Hickman and Nicholas Wessel; one great-great grandchild, Vance Romeo Hickman; brothers, Max, Stanley and Harold Welshhons; sisters, Lorraine Wittkowski, Norma Rippee and Lucille Sindric. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Inez (Freeman) Welshhons, brothers, Ivan, Dean, Harley and Clarence Welshhons; and sisters, Hazel Scoglund and Mary Burbank.

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the wonderful care Vance received by the Iowa Heart Center in Des Moines and Westview Care Center in Indianola.

Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, November 8, 2012 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the Sandyville Cemetery, Sandyville, Iowa.
