Caleb Seaman was born in New York, the precise location as yet unknown. Although his father is unknown, Caleb was a descendant of the well-known Capt. John Seaman, an early colonial settler who migrated from England to Massachusetts in the Winthrop Fleet of 1630, and who later became a pioneer settler of Hempstead, Long Island.

The paper trail begins in 1795 placing Caleb as a resident of New Windsor, Orange County, New York. By 1820 he was the head of a large family living in New Windsor.

Caleb Seaman married Rosanna Hamilton who was the eldest daughter of James Hamilton and Sarah Belknap of New Windsor, New York. Their marriage occurred several months before her father James Hamilton died in 1798. Rosanna was probably 16-years old. Several children remain unrecorded, and it is believed two sons and three daughters are missing. Their traceable children were sons Hamilton, Isaac, Jackson, and John D. Seaman, and daughters Arminda (Seaman) Frantz and Almira (Seaman) Baker.

From about 1825 onward, Caleb is consistently recorded as a resident of Mentz, Cayuga County, New York. At various times, all of his known children are recorded in census records as having lived in the Town of Mentz or Port Byron village. Caleb and Rosanna owned various properties in Cayuga and Onondaga Counties, some of which were inherited from Rosanna's father James Hamilton.

Caleb Seaman is buried in the Old Montezuma Cemetery in the town of Montezuma, Cayuga County, New York USA.
