Barney Agena Severely Injured
A very bad accident occurred last Friday at the Church corner two miles west of Sterling when Barney Agena received a broken leg and other severe injuries. He was riding his horse, apparently going home from some work he had been doing near Wm. Eilers. At the corner his horse and a truck driven by Al Bentzinger, collided in some manner, with the aforesaid result. The truck driver drove clear to the north side of the road in an effort to avoid hitting the horse, but the horse was evidently unmanageable and was knocked down with its rider. Mr. Agena was taken to Beatrice to the Lutheran hospital where his condition for a time was very grave. We are glad to report at this time that his chances for recovery are good.
Obituary
Bernhard John Agena was born Aug 5, 1884 in Sterling, Nebr. On Aug. 10, 1884, he was baptized in the Immanuel Lutheran church of which he was a life long member. Here he attended school and was confirmed Apr. 29, 1900. On Dec. 20, 1904, he was united in marriage to Lena Walters of Sterling, Nebr. This union was blessed with 5 children, 3 boys and 2 girls, all living at the time of his death. He lived on his Mother's farm 2 miles West of Sterling, all his life. On Sept. 13, 1935, as he was returning home from work on horseback, he was struck by a truck and badly injured. He was taken to a hospital in Beatrice, and there he died, of the effects of this accident, last Thursday Dec. 3rd. at 3 p.m. He leaves to mourn his death; his aged Mother, Mrs. Geske Agena, his mother in law, Mrs. Janna Sangen, wife Lena, sons; John, George and Edgar all of the home. Two daughters; Mrs. Harm Dorn of Tecumseh and Frieda at home. One granddaughter, Irene Dorn, one son in law, Harm Dorn, two brothers H. J. and G. J. Agena, two sisters; Mrs. Anna Hestermann and Katherine Huls. Five brothers in law and 4 sister in laws, and a great number of other relatives and friends.
He was laid to rest in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery last Friday in the presence of many relatives and friends. Rev. Degner, his pastor officiated.
