Charles Adolph Achee, Jr., a lifelong resident of the New Orleans area, died peacefully in the presence of his family on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at the age of 85. Born on July 11, 1926, Mr. Achee was preceded in death by his parents Charles Achee, Sr. and Alice Hogan Achee. Charlie is survived by his wife Shirley Hyde Achee, his sister Lorraine Achee Rizzuto (Ben); his children from his predeceased first wife Sybil Frisco: Barbara Achee Landry and Perry Achee, and his grandchildren: Jessica Landry LeSaicherre (Ryan), Caroline Landry, Phillip Landry, Andrew Landry, Ryan Achee, Stefanie Achee, Timothy Achee, Patrick Achee; his stepchildren: Leslie Meisner, Peter Meisner (Helen), and Lyle Meisner Williams (Mark); step grandchildren: Rachael Eads, Sarah Eads, Melanie Meisner, Olivia Meisner, Madeline Meisner and Theodore Mace; and great-grandchildren: Abigail LeSaicherre and Claire LeSaicherre.
Mr. Achee was graduated from Jesuit High School, Class of 1943 and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Army Air Force in the South Pacific theater on Guam and Saipan until his honorable discharge. Working as the ground crew chief mechanic at only 18 years of age, he kept everything flying from giant B-29 bombers to P-51 escort fighters.
After the war Charlie designed, built, and maintained motion picture theatres and equipment across the nation. He owned, and operated National Cinema Service and was respected among movie companies nationwide.
Mr. Achee was deservedly proud to have been the first president of St. Edward the Confessor Parish Association of Men (STEAM). The Archdiocese of New Orleans awarded Charlie the Order of St. Louis Medallion, which can be received only once in a lifetime for service to the Archdiocese.
Mr. Achee also worked as a volunteer at East Jefferson General Hospital.
A private visitation for family members will be at 9 o'clock a.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2012. Open visitation will be at 10 o'clock, and all are invited to attend a Funeral Mass in the Chapel at LAKE LAWN FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., at noon. Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Masses or donations in Charlie's memory to the Jesuit High School Building Fund or the St. Charles Parish SPCA are preferred.
