Harold H. “Corky” Carson, 97, of Council Grove, Kansas, passed away February 9, 2018, at Diversicare.
He was born November 30, 1920, in Cummings, Kansas, the son of Riley W. and Ella May (Andre) Carson. He graduated from Effingham High School in 1938. After graduation, Corky worked at A & P Food Stores, before joining the Army Air Corp in 1941. He served in the 8th Air Force, 392nd Bomb Group, stationed at RAF Wendling Station, near Dereham, Norfolk, England. He was a Captain and pilot of the B24 Bomber and served a tour of missions.
After WWII, Corky managed Caroline Keen’s dress shop in Leavenworth; for several years, he managed the Atchison Air Port, which at the time, flew charters, gave flying lessons and sold aircraft; he later managed Savings & Loan offices in Atchison and Kansas City before moving to Council Grove to manage Anchor Savings & Loan in 1974. He retired in 1985.
Corky was a member of the Council Grove Chamber of Commerce, Country Club, Rotary, and American Legion.
He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing, hunting and trap shooting. In his later years, he watched all sports on TV, especially KU Basketball. He loved traveling, family gatherings and spending time with friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Mildred (Carson) Phillips and Virgle Carson, nieces, Dorothy (Carson) Brading and Delores (Phillips) Hoge.
Corky is survived by his nephews, Joe Phillips (Athena), Robert Carson (Wanda), Virgle Carson (Jackie); 6 grandnieces; 1 grandnephew; many great grands; and longtime companion Shirley Rees.
At Corky’s request, cremation has taken place. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, February 22nd, from 5:00 – 6:30PM, at Zeiner Funeral Chapel.
An inurnment will be held at 1:00PM, Friday, February 23rd, at Cummings Cemetery, at Cummings, KS.
Following the inurnment, a visitation for family and friends to gather and share memories of Corky, will be held from 1:30 to 3:30, at Paolucci’s Restaurant, 113 S 3rd Avenue, Atchison, KS.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Council Grove Senior Center and may be sent in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, PO Box 273, Council Grove, KS 66846.
