Mary was born on November 7, 1847, in Bethany, Harrison County, Missouri. Her parents were John and Margaret Holland. She was the second of their five children. The 1850 and 1860 US Census forms show them farming their own land.

In 1868 Mary married Joseph Robertson. The 1870 US Census shows Joseph and Mary living in Bethany Township with their one year old son, John. Joseph was a farmhand and owned real estate valued at $300.

Joseph and Mary also had three daughters, all born in Missouri:
Margaret (Maggie) born in 1871,
Johanna (Anna) born in 1875, and
Rose Armeta (Meta) born in 1877.

By 1880 the entire family was living and farming in Cottonwood Township, Chase County, Kansas, where Mary's parents then lived.

The 1900 US Census shows Joseph and Mary back in Missouri, this time in Dade County. Their grandson (by their daughter Maggie) Joseph Pierce, age 12, was living with them because Maggie had died in 1894 and her husband, William "Bud" Pierce had died in 1898.

In 1910, Joseph and Mary were living in Kansas City, Missouri, with their daughter Meta Osman and her family.

Mary died in 1910 and was buried near her daughter Maggie, her son John, and her father John Holland, in Clements Cemetery, Chase County, Kansas.
