James was born and raised in Johnson City.His
mother died due to a rail road accident when
he was about 3 years old.James was a gentle
person and had a great sense of humor and
was always kind to everyone.He graduated in
1966 from Happy Valley High School.
Four months after graduating from high school
he enlisted in the Marines 29 September 1966
at the Knoxville Recruiting Office,at the age
of 18 years,2 months and 12 days old.
James took his boot camp training at Parris
Island from 30 September to 25 November
1966 and graduated with Platoon 3114.Upon
arriving in Vietnam 22 August 1967 James was
assigned to Golf Company,2nd Battalion,3rd
Marine Regiment,3rd Marine Division.James
died during combat from gunshot wounds to
the head and body from hostile small arms
fire when the company engaged enemy forces
on a ridge above QL-9,5 kilometers southeast
of Khe Sanh Airfield.
James was single and served his country for 1
year,7 months and 25 days and was KIA#
28,365.
He had been in Vietnam 9 months and 2 days.
James was 19 year,10 months and 10 days
old.
