Doris Ellen Hughes Carawon, 93, of New Bern, died February 27, 2009, at Two Rivers Healthcare.

She was born June 15, 1915 to the late Joseph Allen and Delilah Harrison Hughes.

Doris resided in Santa Ana, California, fo 40 years and was a nutritionist at Fairview State Hospital until her retirment in 1984. Upon her return to New Bern in 1998, she resided at The Courtyards of Berne Village until her recent hospitlization.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Harold E. Carawon; her daughter, Genevieve Phillips;and nine brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her daughter Jean Gaskins of New Bern, one sister, Eula Church of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; grandchilden, Denise (Josh) Wiley, Rene (Bob) Gryb, and Celeste (Harry) Bryan, all of New Bern; Kvin (Angie) Gaskins of Moody, Alabama; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Lowery and Laney Harris.

Many thanks to Lori Steblow and Mary Lynn Cheves as well as thanks to all of the many in-home aides over the last six years.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Lakeside Chapel, Greenleaf Memorial Park with the Rev. Harry Bryan officiating.
