Students - Union Township School 3 - Leach
A Virtual Cemetery created by: David Smith
Description: One of Union Township's nine one room schools, School 3, also known as the Leach school, was located in Section 32 in the southwest portion of Union Township. The school is shown on the southwest corner of the "heirs of E. (Enos) Leach" farm in the 1878 map of Union Township. These schools offered instruction through the eighth grade to the children living on the nearby farms. The first six of these schools were built around 1855. The township schools operated into the early 1900's when they were closed with the students attending a consolidated school in Lizton. Many students only achieved an eighth grade education until the Lizton High School started in 1896 produced its first graduates in 1899.
