Thunderbolt ski
A Virtual Cemetery created by: Anonymous
Description: "Thunderbolt" is the name of a once world class downhill ski racingtrail on the east slope of Massachusetts' highest peak, Mt. Greylock (3,491 ft.) located in Berkshire County. Through efforts by the Mt. Greylock Ski Club and support from other local ski clubs, ski enthusiasts, and state and local agencies, coordination for its construction began in 1933. The trail was laid out in the fall of 1934 and was cut through the woods in three months by the 107th Company of the newly created Civilian Conservation Corps. Soon after it was completed, national downhill champion Joseph Duncan visited the trail and called it "undoubtedly the most thrilling wooded run yet built in the country." The trail was named after a roller coaster at Revere Beach and in February of 1935 it was ready for the first Massachusetts State Downhill Championship race. State and Eastern downhill championship races, as well as many amateur races, took place during the 1930's and 1940's. PURPLE MOUNTAIN MAJESTY, A History of the Thunderbolt Ski Run, A Film by Blair Mahar, is an award winning documentary about the history of this ski trail and the people whose lives were touched by it.
