Description: Dr. Edward Gantt was a surgeon who served in General Andrew Jackson's Tennessee Militia during the Creek War of 1813-1814. In 1834, Gantt and others procured marble quarries under the name of Edward Sims & Company within the lands newly ceded by the Creek Indians to the United States. John Herd, of "The Herd Bro's" sold his quarry to Dr. Gantt in 1845, and it became known as Gantt's Quarry. Local historian Carolyn Lane Luttrell reported that they produced the "...most ornate autographed tombstones." in a paper read at the annual meeting of the Alabama Historical Association at the University of Alabama on April 16, 1949."Stories and Facts from Old Marble Tombstones in Alabama" by Carolyn L. Luttrell, The Alabama Review. The headstone of Mary Gillispie Stone (1812-1848) is marked "Taylor, Gantt & McKenzie".
