A Virtual Cemetery created by: Jenifer
Description: John Hammy was the son of Sylvester Hammy of Chur, Switzerland and Euphemia Gimber of Baden, Germany, both immigrants to our country. He spent his entire life of 82 years on the same farm west of Lake Contrary, was the oldest resident of the lake neighborhood, and one of the best known men in rural south Buchanan County. He married Ida Ellen Irwin, and they were married 57 years. She died on the farm July 1944.Mr Hammy had an excellent memory and was an authority on the early history of the county. As a boy, he had seen guerrilla raiders in action along the Missouri boarder, and the preparations made to defend farms against them. When he was young and attending school in St Joseph, a very quiet man often used to come down to watch the boys play ball. It was after that man was shot and killed, that the spectator was identified as Jesse James.Mr Hammy is an ardent Democrat. He was also a member of the Lutheran Church, King Hill Lodge No. 379, A.F.& A.M., and the King Hill ChapterNo. 55, Order of the Eastern Star. He is survived by 3 children:Mary Gertrude Hammy Heller; Nellie Arline Hammy Jones; and Edward Sylvester (Buck) Hammy. He was an uncle to Stonewall Jackson (Stony)Shepherd who was a sheriff in Buchanan County. He will be missed by his loved ones. May he rest in peace beside his beloved wife.
