In Nederland A Virtual Cemetery created by: andringa
Description: Since I'm first generation on one side of my family, half of my ancestors were buried in remote, northern Holland not far from the Waddenzee. Burial locations can be difficult to determine in the Netherlands since grave sites are recycled every 20-30 years, and the old gravestone is destroyed and the body lowered to make way for the next burial. This is necessary because it is a small country where land is valuable and needed by the living. Fortunately, today wonderful volunteers have begun photographing gravestones & photos are posted on websites such as www.graftombe.nl, www.dutch-cemeteries.com, http://piersma-genealogie.eu Nevertheless, it is often difficult to locate a cemetery, even when I know what village my ancestor was buried in. I love a challenge!! I am grateful every day when I am reminded of the poverty these people lived in!
