DC or "Angel" (Darrell Caldwell) bought around 40,000 head some years in the 70's and early 80's,most were trucked to Iowa and north Missouri.Some years he bought over a million dollars in pigs. Yeager and Sullivan (buyer Austin),Farmland (buyer Rolland "Pig" Paul),Ray Dethrow,and Mike Dethrow were other major dealers.Towns were a busy place on sale day,feed and farm supply stores,trucking companies,downtown districts,and banks thrived on the dollars put into the local economy. West Plains Missouri(Howell County) hosted the National Feeder Pig Show from 1971 to 1984 at the Heart of the Ozarks Fairgrounds.Tommy Spoor Lanton,Mo was a big winner as well as Roy Longnecker and Glyn Trimble.The Missouri State Fair champion county pen of 4 market hogs were from Howell County in 196_,Bob Hinds,Rolland Pig Paul,Hank Freter,and Claude Gauldin.Walter Spoor won the 197_ carcass contest at the Mo State Fair.The Missouri State Duroc Show was held in West Plains for several years. The Oregon County Fair at Alton hosted the only feeder pig show at a county fair in the United States from 1979 to 1996.Baker Hog Farm was always a contender with top quality crossbred feeder pigs.Shann Caldwell won the 1984 market hog portion of the show and the 1987 carcass contest. Pig Paul's Pork Plantation purebred seedstock operation advertised "clean air,clean water,clean hogs" Pork Plantation had several pens of 3 test station boars. A Yorkshire pen at SEMO had 1.96 ADG and 3.02 FE,those figures were a goal of Pig Paul's. Boar test stations in Missouri were SEMO Cape Girardeau,NE Mo Maryville,UMC Columbia,NW Mo,and Mt. Vernon. Three Willow Springs purebred operations held production sales the same day,so that producers from out of the area could purchase all their needs in one trip to the Ozarks. Pork Plantation YDH,Hinds Farm LHY,& Hank Freter CW The Missouri Extension Service Howell County agent Winston Ewing held the Feeder Pig Derby feedout contest at the John Pettit farm in southwest Howell County in 1983 and 1984,Ozarks feeder pigs outperformed the National Barrow Show contest entries.The 1983 contest was won by Prema Vera Ranch. Hinds Farms Hampshires won 2 major shows the same day at Kansas City and St Louis,196_. Hinds Hamps set the standard in leanness for many years. Leon Brassfield,Vic Sims,Mark Hinds,Hugh Dotson,Posey Howell,Jinks Wynn,Everette Brothers,Robert Caldwell,West Plains Feeder Pig Company-Charles Scudder(Tamworth),Henderson & Day, were good producers. Maurice Alexander Mo Ext Service invented the Son-O-Ray x-ray to measure the backfat and loin size of market hogs and breeding stock,this greatly advanced the genetics of Missouri swine.Alex measured the market hogs at the Howell and Oregon County Fairs for many years. A 217 pound hamp gilt (Hinds breeding) bred,raised and shown by Marva Caldwell at the 1989 Heart of the Ozarks Fair Market Hog Show was the leanest hog ever Son-O-Rayed in the area,measuring .50 backfat and 59.14 percent lean in 1989! Sarah Caldwell's beautiful York/Duroc gilt was a winner in 1996. Lindan Caldwell's feeder pig/market hog pair were winners in 1997.Clintan Caldwell bred,raised and exibited the 2009 Missouri State Fair Growth and Quality Classic Grand Champion Registered Spotted Barrow.Caldwell Feeder Pigs/Caldwell Durocs showed market hogs and breeding swine from 1979 until 2009 at the Ozark Empire Fair,NW Missouri Regional Market Hog Show,Tina,Mo,Buffalo Mo,Missouri State Fair,UMC Columbia Barrow feedout,Thayer FFA Show,Oregon Co Fair,Heart of the Ozarks Fair. Several Duroc and Landrace champion boars,gilts,and barrows,Ozark Empire Fair Supreme Sire Awards. Scott Corman Pomona won the 1977 Mo State Fair carcass contest. Winston Ewing,retired Livestock Specialist from the Howell County Extension Service survey estimated in 1991 that Howell and Oregon County feeder producers were adding 6.5 million dollars to the local economy per year. Dr Hollis Smith served on the National Meat Board.
