Maple Hill Civil War Veterans A Virtual Cemetery created by: FJE
Description: Maple Hill Cemetery was located in St Anthony, the original name of Minneapolis. As the city grew the cemetery stood in the way of civic improvements so the decision was made to disinter the bodies and move them to other locations. This was begun at the turn of the 20th century. When the pace of improvements slowed what remained of the cemetery turned into an abandoned eyesore which generated complaints from the surrounding neighborhood. These complaints fell on deaf ears. Finally disgruntled neighbors took matters into their own hands. In 1905 they gathered in the middle of the night with their horses and went into the cemetery and pulled out the remaining tombstones and proceeded to throw them into a nearby ditch. Most of the remains of the interred were never found and among them were Civil War soldiers. The site is now known as Beltrami Park and the city erected this memorial for the soldiers. I have included the militaty information for those I found on the Civil War muster rolls.
