Description: When asked how many people were in New York City society, Ward Mcallister, Social Arbiter of New York City, claimed only 400 people made the list, 215 families. "If you go outside that number" he said "then that person either makes himself uncomfortable or those around him". It just so happened that this was the precise number of people Mrs Astor could fit comfortably in her New York City ballroom. When reporters asked for a list, he gave it to them. This is the list.
