ALABAMA STATE ARTILLERY(KETCHUM/GARRITY)

This artilley battery was formed may 4,1861 and was made up from men in the Mobile area. It served at Pensacola for a short time before moving to Corinth, MS. It was present at Shiloh, battles in Kentucky, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge and around Atlanta. During the fighting at Shiloh, the battery was credited with saving an entire brigade. Col Pond's men were caught in a severe cross-fire at the Hornet's Nest. The actions of the battery aided the withdrawal of the men who were able to escape and re-deploy. The battery later took part in a massive artillery bombardment of the Hornet's Nest and the eventual Union surrender of that part of the battlefield. The bombardment, which was made up of more than fifty cannons, was the largest ever on the North American continent up unto that time.
