51st Virginia Infantry
A Virtual Cemetery created by: Deborah
Description: There were 11 companies in the 51st. George Washington Moon enlisted at Wythville and was to join Company G. The regiment was known as the "Floyd Gamecocks"Capt James W. Henley organized & mustered 83 men at Camp Floyd in Amherst Co., on 24 July 1861.That winter in the Kanawha Valley, Co. G had lost more than 50% of it's original number. At Fayette Court House, the men had to sleep on the bare ground after marching in the freezing rain from Laurel Creek. These men won little glory in the many maneuvers, minor skirmishes and few real battles. But they experienced and endured tremendous hardships throughout.
