Town Founding and Namesakes
A Virtual Cemetery created by: David Smith
Description: In February of 1851, Jesse Veiley platted out the town of New Elizabeth, Indiana in honor of his wife, Elizabeth (Leak) Vieley. An 1865 shows the town soon after its founding. Most of the buildings are along Main Street, later U.S. 136. Later maps show Lizton in 1878 (lower right corner of page with Middle Township map) and 1904 where growth has occurred to the north probably because the railroad built in the late 1860's went north of the then existing town. Sometime in the 1870's, the town's name was shortened to Lizton. The name of Lizton is unique in being the only Lizton in the United States. The village of Rainstown (more commonly called Raintown) on the eastern edge of Union Township was named after Hiram Rains.
